On 27-28 May 2026, the 18th Scientific and Technical Conference “Modern Gravel and Sand Mines” was held in Rzeszów. The event is regarded as one of the most important industry gatherings dedicated to the natural aggregates sector in Poland. The conference brought together representatives of mining companies, industry experts, researchers, and suppliers of technologies and services for the extractive industry.
This year’s edition provided an opportunity not only to exchange experience and showcase the latest technological solutions, but also to discuss the challenges facing the sector in light of rising operating costs, regulatory changes, and the ongoing energy transition.
Particular attention was given to modern methods of mineral extraction, improving production efficiency, and the use of innovative technologies supporting the management of mining operations. Considerable focus was also placed on process automation, production digitalisation, and solutions that help companies manage energy consumption more effectively and reduce related costs. Participants agreed that efficient energy management has become one of the key factors influencing the competitiveness of businesses operating in the extractive sector.
Environmental and social aspects of open-pit mining were another important topic of discussion. Participants explored ways of conducting mining activities in a more sustainable manner, reducing the environmental impact of industrial operations, and maintaining positive relationships with local communities. Recent changes to mining and environmental regulations and their impact on business operations were also reviewed.
The conference programme included presentations on Poland’s aggregate resource base and the future outlook for the domestic aggregates market. Experts highlighted the growing importance of the sector for infrastructure and construction projects, as well as the need to ensure a stable supply of raw materials essential for the country’s continued economic development.
A separate session focused on team management, internal communication, and employee engagement. Speakers emphasised that a modern mining company is not defined solely by advanced technology and efficient production processes, but also by skilled employees and a strong organisational culture.
The conference featured speakers from academia, industry associations, and companies operating in the aggregates sector, who shared practical experience related to extraction and processing technologies, production management, and the implementation of innovative solutions.
Representatives of PUBIH and the investment group Via Polonia also attended the conference and actively participated in industry meetings and discussions. The event provided an opportunity to present the potential for economic cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, as well as to exchange experiences related to investment and infrastructure projects. Representatives of Via Polonia outlined their ongoing work on preparing investment sites for logistics infrastructure development in the Lviv region, highlighting growing investor interest in projects supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction and economic development.
A special role during the conference was played by Holcim Polska, which served as the Honorary Host of the event. Participants had the opportunity to visit the company’s aggregate mine in Dębina Łętowska, where modern extraction and processing methods were presented alongside practical examples of solutions aimed at improving operational efficiency and workplace safety.
The conference provided a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and experience, reaffirming the importance of the natural aggregates sector for the development of infrastructure and construction in Poland. It also created opportunities for establishing new business relationships and discussing the future direction of the industry in the years ahead.
