On 24 June 2026, as part of the accompanying events of the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC 2026) in Gdańsk, the side event “European-Ukrainian Dialogue on Biomethane Market Access, Investment & Cross-Border Platform Cooperation” took place. The event was organised by UkraineInvest, Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft (GWW) and Johanssen+Kretschmer Strategic Communication.
The event brought together representatives of public authorities, the energy sector, investors, financial institutions and industry associations from Ukraine, Germany and other European countries. Its main objective was to explore opportunities for expanding cooperation in biomethane production, exports and market development, while supporting the integration of Ukraine’s biomethane sector into the European Union energy market.
Throughout the discussions, speakers emphasised that the growing demand for renewable gases across Europe presents Ukraine with a unique opportunity to become a strategic supplier of reliable and certified biomethane. Particular attention was given to the country’s strong agricultural base, large-scale farming sector and the close links between agriculture and renewable energy production, which provide favourable conditions for the development of the biomethane industry.
One of the key topics was the Ukrainian Government Programme for the Development of Biomethane Production until 2035, which aims to create a framework for expanding domestic production, increasing exports and integrating Ukraine into the European energy market. Participants agreed, however, that unlocking this potential will require addressing a number of regulatory, technical and commercial challenges, including certification systems, guarantees of origin, grid connection, cross-border transport, offtake arrangements and improving the bankability of biomethane projects for investors and financial institutions.
The programme also included discussions on financing models for biomethane projects, investment risk mitigation instruments- including war-risk insurance and related financial mechanisms- as well as opportunities for technology partnerships and closer cooperation between Ukrainian and European companies.
The list of speakers included leading representatives of institutions actively involved in the development of the biomethane sector, including Maryna Khlystun, CEO of UkraineInvest; Bengt Bergt, Director of Public Affairs at Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft; Anna Zamazeeva, Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine; Oliver Gierlichs, General Manager at Bayer and President of AHK Ukraine; Adomas Audickas, Deputy CEO for Bioenergy at MHP; and Kostiantyn Lisnychyi, Advisor to the Executive Director at UkraineInvest.
Following the official programme, participants took part in a networking session and dedicated B2B and B2G meetings, providing valuable opportunities to establish new business contacts and discuss potential investment projects and partnerships within the biomethane sector.
Representatives of PUBIH (Polish-Ukrainian Investment & Trade Office) also attended the event, using the opportunity to strengthen relationships with public institutions, investors and companies interested in developing cooperation in renewable energy and projects supporting Ukraine’s economic recovery.
